Renowned in operatic repertoire from Mozart’s Don Giovanni and Rossini’s Figaro (Barber of Seville) to Janáček’s Shishkov (From the House of the Dead) by way of Wagner’s Amfortas (Parsifal) and Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin, the Swedish baritone surmounts the most challenging of song cycles in a rare recital appearance. So, yes, Peter Mattei sings Winterreise. But also: David Fray plays Winterreise, and that’s an occasion, too. Prominent in the French pianist’s discography are pellucid, musicianly, deeply poetic albums of Bach, Chopin, and, yes, Schubert—none, so far, in tandem with a vocalist. There’s a fashion now for recitals enhanced (tarted up?) with video, dance, histrionics, and lighting effects, but there will be none of that here. Just the music, folks—and in the end, what more do we need? —Matthew Gurewitsch
