Peter Hujar’s black-and-white portraits are distinctive. He photographed people up-close, his subjects perfectly poised, even theatrical, yet touched with enigma. In the early 1970s, when he was living in a loft in Lower Manhattan, Hujar became interested in theater. Robert Wilson’s nearby performance group, Byrd Hoffman School of Byrds, captured his attention and he began to photograph members of the group. He also shot the Ridiculous Theatrical Company and the Cockettes, focusing on the dressing room, where actors applied makeup and donned costumes. This exhibition includes 60 photographs by Hujar as well as works by those in his inner circle—Greer Lankton, Sheryl Sutton, and his longtime partner David Wojnarowicz. —Elena Clavarino
