Orthodox Church Vestments of the 17th to Early 20th Centuries in the Hermitage Collection

May 1, 2021 – Mar 13, 2022
Palace Square, 2, Sankt-Peterburg, Russia, 190000

Unlike almost every other form of attire, church vestments have never been subject to fickle fashion and its changing silhouettes. Dating back to the Byzantine Empire, the robe-like garments remain caped, cocooned, spirituality stirring within. But what about those ornate embellishments upon the vestment’s surface? This decoration did take influence from changing styles in architecture and art. And when it comes to embellishment, the church is in a class by itself, though royalty sometimes gives it a run for the money. The exhibition is located in the newly restored Small Church of the Winter Palace, where astonishing liturgical pieces will be rotated throughout the run. —L.J.
