The Arts Intel Report

Ombre à l'Ombre

Oct 9, 2019 – Jan 11, 2020
Avenue Louise 430, 1050 Bruxelles, Belgium

Jennifer Blessing, the Guggenheim’s senior curator of photography, explains that Lyle Ashton Harris’s work is “a kind of self-portraiture through objects, photographs, and papers.” In his latest work, the artist is experimenting with monochromatic photo collages. The photograph components are suffused into aluminum, which is then inlaid into a patterned ground reminiscent of West African fabrics. The effect of floating histories is somber—a deeply intimate form of storytelling. —E.C.
