While stage productions are mostly paused due to the coronavirus, the theater world has turned to newer mediums in order to reach audiences virtually. This fundraising show for the Manhattan Theater Club not only reunites fans with beloved actors but also previews works to be staged once box offices reopen. Edie Falco performs a new monologue written by the playwright Simon Stevens, author of 2015’s The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, which took home the Tony for best play that year. The Pulitzer Prize-winning author Elizabeth Strout debuts new writing for a stage adaptation of her novel My Name is Lucy Barton, to be read by Laura Linney, who holds five Tony Awards. Such performances may make audiences wistful for live theater, but the appeal of the evening isn’t nostalgia: there is plenty of new work here to be excited about. —C.J.F.
