Notes from Pallet Town

Sept 22, 2019 – Feb 23, 2020
Aranya Gold Coast, Beidaihe, Hebei province, China

Some of you may remember Pallet Town as Pokémon’s hometown. For those who aren’t video-game aficionados, try to envision the aesthetic of a 1990s Japanese electronic fantasy. On the sandy coasts of China’s Bohai Sea, Leelee Chan, Guo Cheng, and the artist duo of Jingfang Hao and Lingjie Wang have created their own Pallet Town. These site-specific installations have a glossy, idyllic sheen, but they differ from the original. The artists have asked people to describe their fantasy utopias, and then used the ideas to reimagine the architecture of contemporary life. —E.C.
