Not Just the Tudors

Catherine Parr is mostly remembered as King Henry VIII’s sixth and final wife. In Not Just the Tudors, the British historian and host Suzannah Lipscomb explains how an unknown housewife ultimately became the Queen of England, outliving the king. First order of business, her name. Despite what history books print, she spelled it Kateryn. Next up, her other husbands. She started with Sir Edward Burgh; after his death she married John Neville, 3rd Baron Latimer, who died in 1543. By the time Henry and Catherine wed (that same year!), they could count seven former spouses between them. But there’s more to Catherine than her marriages, as Lipscomb and her podcast guest, historian Dr. Susan James, reveal. While Lipscomb gives each of Henry VIII’s wife their due, the podcast covers more the just the House of Tudors (as the title plainly says). If you’ve had your fill of British royal drama, try an episode on 17th-century Icelandic witches, or same-sex marriage in Renaissance Rome. —Jensen Davis
