Directed by Gia Coppola, a granddaughter of Francis Ford Coppola, The Last Showgirl tells the tale of 57-year-old Shelly Gardner, a seasoned Vegas performer whose rhinestone-and-feathers revue gets the axe after 30 years. Shelly is played by the former Baywatch star Pamela Anderson, who knows better than most what it’s like to be mistreated and discarded by the entertainment industry. While the younger dancers in the show (played by Brenda Song and Kiernan Shipka) are more than happy to move on to greener pastures, Shelly struggles to find her place in a changed Vegas. Aided by a stellar supporting cast that includes Jamie Lee Curtis, Dave Bautista, and Billie Lourd, Anderson gives a Golden Globe-nominated performance of grace under pressure. —Paulina Prosnitz
