Kill List

Kill List traces one reporter’s dive into the depths of the dark web.

In the spring of 2020, an amateur internet sleuth named Chris Monteiro approached the tech journalist Carl Miller with an incredible story: he had hacked into a hitman-for-hire website on the dark web and uncovered a list of names—people who someone, somewhere, wanted dead. The website was a scam. Users paid for a hit in bitcoin, which promptly disappeared, and no “operative” ever showed up. And yet, people on the list began to die. What began as a journalistic exploration transformed into a race against time, as Miller attempted to alert those on the list of the threat and to convince law enforcement to take action. Miller describes it all—the cold calls, the early arrests, the eventual international investigation by the FBI and Interpol—in this thrilling new podcast. —Paulina Prosnitz
