In the spring of 2020, an amateur internet sleuth named Chris Monteiro approached the tech journalist Carl Miller with an incredible story: he had hacked into a hitman-for-hire website on the dark web and uncovered a list of names—people who someone, somewhere, wanted dead. The website was a scam. Users paid for a hit in bitcoin, which promptly disappeared, and no “operative” ever showed up. And yet, people on the list began to die.
