Born in Nigeria and now based in Los Angeles, the painter Njideka Akunyili Crosby uses her canvases to “center Black life, my experience as a Black woman, and the complexity of Black life.” Her latest solo exhibition presents four new paintings. The centerpiece is a massive self-portrait that sees the artist relaxing on her back porch with a young child balanced on her lap. The scenes in the other three canvases are drawn from family photographs and spreads from Nigerian magazines featuring athletes and musicians. —Jensen Davis
