Ningiukulu (Ning) Teevee was born in 1963, in the hamlet of Kinngait (formerly Cape Dorset), on the southern tip of Baffin Island. Her generation was the first to be raised in a permanent community; before that her people traveled across seasonal hunting camps. Still, Inuit traditions, their ancient Arctic world, are at the heart of Teevee’s work, both in form and content. Since 2004, she’s contributed 150 drawings to the Cape Dorset Annual Print Collection. These inviting works show scenes of animals, spirits, and the wilderness, and recount Inuit myths and creation stories. “It is very humbling to share my art with other parts of the world who maybe don’t know our stories and are experiencing our art for the first time,” says Teevee, “I’m happy to be a part of that process.” —Clara Molot
