Nineteenth- and Twentieth-Century Tapestries in the Hermitage Collection

Sept 18, 2019 – Jan 12, 2020
Palace Square, 2, Sankt-Peterburg, Russia, 190000

Tapestries and textiles, gems gathering dust in museum storage, now have their very own gallery. A tapestry from William Morris’s only Russian workshop! Several silks commissioned by Nicholas II for the Winter Palace! Newly acquired works such as a Fernand Léger carpet, a Jean Lurçat textile. The art of the loom is gaining increasing curatorial importance. The Hermitage has placed these stunning works between galleries that display visual arts from the same periods. —C.J.F.
