Nick Cave: Forothermore

Nick Cave, Arm Peace, 2018.

May 14 – Oct 2, 2022
220 E Chicago Ave, Chicago, IL 60611, USA

The Chicago artist Nick Cave trained as a dancer with Alvin Ailey, then moved on to create extravagant wearable sculptures—“soundsuits” he calls them—part Mardi Gras, part totem, part camouflage, part dreamscape. Cave’s first “soundsuit” dates back to 1992, when the police beating of Rodney King caused uproar across the nation. He covered a simple silhouette with sticks and twigs, which to his delight made peculiar sounds when the garment was worn. Since then, Cave has created over 500 soundsuits as well as countless sculptures, performances, and dances. In his native city, a career-spanning retrospective celebrates Cave’s artistry. Highlights include never-before-seen works and the premiere of Soundsuits 9:29. —Elena Clavarino
