There’s a difference between art that is available for viewing on the Internet, and art that uses the Internet as its medium. Net Art specializes in the latter, and has actually been in play since the 1980s. A new digital archive, developed by the New Museum’s “Rhizome” branch, compiles 100 works that embody the history of an art movement that has stayed largely under the radar (it’s difficult for museums and galleries to display Internet art). The archive, which includes work by the artists Robert Adrian, Shu Lea Cheang, and Gene McHugh, re-stages and contextualizes one project per week. An accompanying New Museum exhibition, “The Art Happens Here,” will tour nationally when institutions reopen in the U.S. —J.V.
