It’s hard to believe how much Nadya Tolokonnikova has experienced in just 34 years. She co-founded Pussy Riot, a Russian feminist protest and performance-art group. She was sentenced to two years in prison for staging an anti-Putin piece, and sent to a Siberian penal colony for protesting prison conditions. She made it onto Putin’s Most Wanted list. She has published a book and started a media outlet named Mediazona. She even performed a piece that led to the creation of the “Pussy Riot Law,” a bill penalizing anti-religious sentiment. For a performance in August 2022, 12 Pussy Riot members dressed in their typical slip dresses and brightly colored balaclavas and burned a large portrait of the Russian president to protest his leadership. The moment was recorded and made into an art film. To announce the project, Tolokonnikova captioned an Instagram post, “Join our movement against the most dangerous living dictator on the planet.” —Jeanne Malle
