In 2001, director Mira Nair’s romantic-comedy Monsoon Wedding premiered at the Cannes Film Festival and shortly after earned the Golden Lion at the Venice International Film Festival. Set in New Delhi, the film follows intersecting love stories during a traditional and quite lavish Hindu wedding for an arranged marriage. In 2017, Nair’s musical adaptation of her film premiered at the Berkeley Repertory Theater to uneven reviews. Now a reworked version with new choreography debuts at St. Ann’s Warehouse. Compared to the film, there is “really much more of a concerted focus on all female characters,” Nair told The Washington Post. “They have much more of a voice in this stage musical.” —Jensen Davis
