In 1895, the Art Institute of Chicago hosted Claude Monet’s first solo show in the United States. Less than a decade later, it became the first American museum to purchase one of Monet’s paintings. If any doubt remained regarding the city’s connection with the French painter, the water-lily scene in the 1986 classic Ferris Bueller’s Day Off sealed the deal. “Monet and Chicago” is the first show to examine the Windy City’s relationship with the great Impressionist, and it features more than 65 paintings from the Art Institute’s own holdings, along with Monets from other Chicago-based collections. —J.V.
