Primus inter pares is Latin for “first among peers.” That’s the lighting designer Jennifer Tipton. She moves between dance, theater, and opera, never putting a foot wrong. She creates light that is sentient, that time travels, that speaks its own language. Tipton has worked with the Paul Taylor Dance Company for decades—indeed, Tipton started her career with Taylor—and she designed the lighting for the masterpiece he made in response to the 9/11 attacks, Promethean Fire. This year’s virtual benefit, titled “Modern is Now: Illumination,” honors our lady of light, Ms. Tipton, with a performance of Promethean Fire on its 20th anniversary. The program also includes special footage of Taylor works selected from the archives. Registration is required. —L.J.
