The Italian word disegno means more than just “drawing” or “design.” It suggests a vision, a sense of line that is as creational as it is true. Michelangelo was called Il Divin’ Disegnatore—The Divine Draftsman and Designer—by his contemporaries. And yet his drawings are not well known. This exhibition celebrates Michelangelo’s draftsmanship with two dozen original drawings—studies of human anatomy and architectural designs. Here is a rare glimpse into the mind of a creative genius. —C.J.F.
