“I do work in different ways at different times,” said the artist Merrill Wagner in 2005. “But most of the work that I do, be it drawing or painting or on stone or on steel, often has a source in thoughts about the landscape. . . . But they’re not landscapes.” Wagner was born in Tacoma, Washington, in 1935, and in the 1950s came East for college in New York, where she made her name. Wagner is known for large-scale abstract paintings that pull color from nature and also immensity. This exhibition at David Zwirner Hong Kong, titled “Nature,” surveys her career and includes works on canvas, paper, slate, stone, plexiglass, and steel. Wagner is now 89 and this is her first show in Greater China in 15 years. —Zack Hauptman
