Matisse by Matisse

Henri Matisse, Two Young Girls, the Yellow Dress, and the Scottish Dress, 1941.

Nov 4, 2023 – Feb 18, 2024
Second Floor, 88 Xizang Bei Lu, Shanghai, China.

When it was announced that the exhibition “Matisse by Matisse” was coming to Beijing, 30,000 tickets sold before it opened. The largest ever Matisse solo show in mainland China, it now moves to Shanghai. Featuring more than 250 works ranging from oil paintings to sculpture, ink drawings, paper cutouts, sketches, and textiles, “Matisse by Matisse” aims to present the artist as the “curator” of his own exhibition. Many of the pieces shown come from his personal collection and each is displayed as he intended. Organized into 10 sections, the exhibition reveals how the great Matisse continually reinvited himself over the course of his career. —Jeanne Malle
