Entering the São Paulo Museum of Art (MASP) is a singular experience, thanks in part to its architect, the Italian Lina Bo Bardi, and the crystal easels she installed to display paintings. From afar, artworks appear to hover in thin air. To find out who painted them, you have to circle around to the back of the canvas—another thoughtful twist on the act of viewing. In recent years, the institution has mounted several acclaimed exhibitions, and its artistic director, Adriano Pedrosa, curated the 2024 Venice Biennale. Since 2019, an expansion of the museum has been underway. The new 14-story, $43 million space is called “Pietro Maria Bardi,” in honor of Lina’s husband—MASP’s first artistic director. From the top floor, you’ll be able to look down at the original 1968 modernist masterpiece. —Elena Clavarino
