“Go at your audience with a whip,” the composer Louis Horst told the young Martha Graham, the greatest modern dancer of the 20th century. “Carve a place for yourself in space,” Graham told the dancers in her company. Between the whip and the knife, the gut and the heart, that’s where you’ll find the Martha Graham Dance Company. The 2019-20 season kicks off at the Vail Dance Festival, then has 12 more tour stops in the U.S. The season holds two premieres: a new work by Troy Schumacher (in Montclair, N.J.) and one by Andrea Miller (at the New York City Center). Graham classics in the touring repertory: Ekstatis, (very early), Chronicle (thrilling), Errand into the Maze (meet your Minotaur), Diversion of Angels (it soars) and, that great moment in the history of the stage, the Graham-Copland-Noguchi masterpiece, Appalachian Spring.—L.J.
