Between the wars, Paris was a place of artistic freedom and the new. Dancers, composers, fashion designers, musicians, filmmakers, and writers flocked to the French capital, installing themselves amid its cobblestones and monuments. One of these artists was the young Man Ray, who came to Paris from New York in 1921. Inspired by the dynamic city, he photographed those he encountered—Breton, Duchamp, Picasso, Cocteau, Hemingway, Joyce. Man Ray’s images captured the era and established him as one of the world’s leading photographers. This exhibition collects 100 of his avant-garde portraits, shot between 1921 and 1940. —E.C.
