“Real museums are places where Time is transformed into Space,” writes Orhan Pamuk in the 2009 novel The Museum of Innocence, his first after winning the Nobel Prize in literature. The Metropolitan Museum of Art, one of the world’s greatest museums, has embodied Pamuk’s ideal for 150 years, an anniversary it celebrates throughout 2020. The centerpiece of the museum’s festivities, which include reimagined British galleries and a three-day event in June, is a singular exhibition that combines more than 250 works from its collection, varying from visitor favorites to fragile, rarely-displayed treasures. —J.V.
