We can’t seem to get enough of the “good thief,” be it Thomas Crown or Danny Ocean and his original 11. Lupin plays into this enduring appeal with an adaptation of the early-20th-century books by Maurice Leblanc, which feature master-of-disguise Arsène Lupin, Gentleman Burglar. In the miniseries, Lupin is everything Leblanc makes him out to be: sneaky, suave, and, despite being a thief, moral. Lupin is also Black (he is played by Omar Sy, of The Untouchables), a refreshing casting decision that allows the topic of race to flow naturally yet significantly through the series.
