Mixtapes became a popular means of romantic courtship beginning in the mid 1970s, functioning as audio love letters with the recipient’s name sprawled adoringly on painters tape fixed to the cassette. The International Center of Photography honors this nostalgic tradition with “Love Songs,” a group show that explores the intimacy inherent in this musical expression of love and desire. The exhibition features the work of 16 leading contemporary photographers, and is organized by the award-winning curator and writer Sara Raza in collaboration with the Maison Européenne de la Photographie, in Paris. The impassioned works date from 1952 to 2022. —Nyla Gilstrap
