Love: Marrakech Opened My Eyes to Color

“When we first visited Marrakech,” recalled Pierre Bergé, the business partner (and for two decades the life partner) of Yves Saint Laurent, “little did we imagine that it would become a second home for us.” In 1966, the two men went to Morocco, where they were immediately struck by the spices, the colors, and the beauty of the Red City. On a stroll through town, they were dazzled by the botanical gardens of the painter Jacques Majorelle, which were open to the public. When the gardens and the home attached to them appeared on the market some 14 years later, Saint Laurent and Bergé bought both. They kept the gardens open to all and used the Villa Oasis as a private home. This exhibition spotlights Saint Laurent’s love affair with the North African country. —Elena Clavarino
