Lost Hills

The Malibu shooter started off with birdshot and then upgraded to real bullets. In the summer of 2018, one of those ended up in the 35-year-old scientist Tristan Baudette, who was camping in a tent with his two young daughters in Malibu Creek State Park. He was shot in the head at close range. This wasn’t the first shooting that took place in the 8,000-acre wilderness and the celebrity-rich area that surrounds it. Dana Goodyear, a staff writer at The New Yorker, spent a year investigating the crimes as well as the main suspect, the survivalist drifter Anthony Rauda. The story made for compelling journalism and an even more compelling podcast, hosted by Goodyear herself. The podcast debuted in April and its bonus episodes continue to reveal more information about the ongoing case. —J.V.
