Art is a labor of love, but when it comes to Loriel Beltrán’s work, the labor is also patient. The Venezuelan-American artist begins each work by pouring brightly colored paint into custom molds, gradually adding layers over a span of several months or even years. Eventually the mold is removed and the built-up material—coagulated into swirls, embedded with color—is sliced into long strips and arranged rhythmically on a wooden panel. The artworks are several feet tall and can be deeply serene or a bit Op. As with geological strata, or the inner rings of a tree, each piece is an embodiment of time and material accumulation. —Paulina Prosnitz
