Art “always starts with a question,” says the artist Lui Wei. And yet, he adds, it “may not find answers, and I’m okay with that.” Western audiences have struggled to understand Liu Wei’s varied practice and his experiments across mediums. In his first U.S. solo exhibition, Liu’s oeuvre is framed in his experience of post-Cultural Revolution China, an era of rapid urbanization that held new promises—and new limitations. American viewers may search for absolutes, but ambiguity is Liu Wei’s point. —C.J.F.
