Known for the meticulous process through which he paints figures into a background—they vanish!—Bolin creates optical illusions that explore meanings: can you hide in plain sight, can a person’s soul merge with objects smaller or a scene larger, and when does a physical disappearance become a spiritual one? —J.V.
