At the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City, two young American athletes, Tommie Smith and John Carlos, took their places on the podium and received the gold and bronze medals, respectively, for the 200-meter race. But after the medals were hung around their necks, both men did something unusual—they raised black-gloved fists in what was a poignant symbol of Black Power.
