La Mama Moves! Dance Festival

Jan 19–27, 2021
66 E 4th St, New York, NY 10003

Blue Man Group, Harvey Fierstein, Philip Glass, Bette Midler, David and Amy Sedaris, Sam Shepard, Robert Wilson. These are some of the artists who were nurtured—before they were names—by the La Mama Experimental Theatre Club, which was founded in 1961. The performance artist Ping Chong calls La Mama “a home to rebels and outsiders.” In 2018, it won a Regional Theatre Tony Award for the part it played in giving “birth to the Off-Off-Broadway movement.” Four artists are featured in the online La Mama Moves! Dance Festival this month—Kevin Augustine, Kari Hoaas, Anabella Lenzu, and Tamar Rogoff with Mei Yamanaka. Who’s afraid of the avant-garde? Not you. —L.J.

Tickets are pay-what-you-can, starting at $5.
