The photographer Kurt Markus, born in Montana, has always lived in the American West. He’s wielded his camera in the realms of fashion, travel, and portraiture, but it’s his images of present-day cowboys—throwbacks to another time—in which his deep connection with these icons and his love of the land they all share becomes a subject in itself. For this exhibition, Markus printed and toned each gelatin silver photograph in his own darkroom—the mark of a true craftsman. —J.V.
