Kimono Couture: The Beauty of Chiso

Nov 7, 2020 – Jan 31, 2021
55 Salisbury St, Worcester, MA 01609, United States

Founded in 1555, the house of Chiso, with its “Made in Kyoto” label, is known for peerless kimonos that are tantamount to haute couture. Chiso has approximately 20,000 pieces in its collection, and 14 of these—both historic and contemporary—will be on exhibit, along with paintings, kimono fragments, and woodblock printed books from the Chiso art collection. Take three minutes to watch the website offering, Process of CHISO yūzen, a film that shows the many intricate dye techniques that go into the making of the finest custom kimonos (the Worcester Art Museum commissioned its own wedding kimono for this exhibition). From blank white silk to the brilliant color and gold flash of the final garment, the artistry is amazing. —L.J.
