In the 1970s and 80s, Keith Haring lived in downtown Manhattan and ran with a pack that included Andy Warhol, Jean-Michel Basquiat, and Kenny Scharf. Together they were an aesthetic force field, and they used their art as a platform to inspire social change. But AIDs cut Haring’s life short: he died in 1990 at the age of 32. Shortly before the artist’s death, Dr. Kazuo Nakamura began collecting Haring’s work, amassing up to 300 works over the following decades. He housed his collection deep in the Yatsugatake Mountains, on the border between the Nagano and Yamanashi Prefectures. For this exhibition, 170 works from the Nakamura Keith Haring Collection have traveled to Pisa. Highlights include Haring’s early masterpieces as well as later works, such as the series Apocalypse (1988) and Flowers (1990). —Elena Clavarino
