KAWS: What Party

Feb 26 – Sept 5, 2021
200 Eastern Pkwy, Brooklyn, NY 11238, USA

The Brooklyn-based artist Brian Connelly, also known as KAWS—a moniker he chose because the letters appealed to him visually—has always courted controversy. His references to consumer culture, captured in a bold pop style, have led some to compare him to Warhol and others to call him a commercial artist. “If you think that Paris Hilton and the Kardashians are important cultural figures,” the art adviser Josh Baer has said, “then you’re likely to think KAWS is an important artist.” Love him or hate him, KAWS is having his first monumental exhibition in Brooklyn. Over 100 broad-ranging works, along with augmented-reality experiments, are in the show. Viewers can form their own opinions. —E.C.
