Julian Kalinowski

Jan 15 – Feb 12, 2022
451 N. La Cienega Blvd. Los Angeles CA, 90048

Julian Kalinowski creates dolls for lost souls, women on the edge, the dispossessed. Based in the U.K., Kalinowski emerged in the Demi Monde era of British fashion, and moved to Los Angeles in the 1990s, where he began selling vintage dolls. Kalinowski styles his dolls as 50s fantasies: think hand-painted faces, little pearl chokers, sublimely coiffed hair. They recall Hollywood starlets of yore, all dressed up and ready to go in little fit-and-flare frocks and floral kerchiefs, their personal tragedies hidden behind a flawless facade. Along with 12 dolls, Kalinowski’s Polaroid portraits from his “Taboo Club” photo series are also on view. Dries Van Noten Los Angeles is the perfect gallery for the show. After all, L.A. is the original Valley of the Dolls. —Sophie Kemp
