Winterreise, Schubert’s 24-song exploration of disappointed love and alienation, is the lieder singer’s Everest. The uninformed may tell you that women never sing it, and few do, for the good reason that the ever-present narrator is a man. Yet among scores of recordings, more than a dozen are by women, from the legendary to the unknown. Still, it’s always an occasion when a woman steps up, and Joyce DiDonato is a more imaginative and searching interpreter than most. She’s sure to offer unexpected perspectives, in tandem with Yannick Nézet-Séguin at the piano. —M.G.
