Jonas Wood

Nov 17, 2021 – Jan 15, 2022
7/F, Pedder Building, 12 Pedder St, Central, Hong Kong

The American artist Jonas Wood resists category. He makes paintings of flat vibrant forms that challenge perception. They might be called still lifes, but could also be called interiors or landscapes. Born in Boston in 1977, Wood moved to Los Angeles in 2003, where Southern California’s flora and fauna have been an endless source of inspiration. The idea for the paintings in this Hong Kong exhibition took root in 2019. That year, during a survey of his work in Dallas, Wood gazed at his painting Polka Dot Orchid (2015)—a single eye-popping stem against a black background—and decided he would create more flora on black backgrounds. Ten are on view here, along with two sets of related drawings. —E.C.
