In 1896, Henrik Ibsen wrote his penultimate play, John Gabriel Borkman. The eponymous protagonist is a high and mighty back manager who has spent eight years in jail for fraud. Now released, he and his wife are living with his wife’s twin sister, who’s been raising their son. Each of the adult characters wants something—wealth, regained social status, love—but all these desires are at odds. An updated version of the play, written by Lucinda Coxon (The Danish Girl), comes to Bridge Theatre. Simon Russell Beale steps into the leading role. —Jensen Davis
