The artist and filmmaker John Akomfrah is known for his investigations into postcolonialism, memory, temporality, and aesthetics. In 1982, with a handful of other multimedia artists, he cofounded the Black Audio Film Collective. The collective made acclaimed films—poetic, political, influential—that examined Black identity within the British experience. Akomfrah’s largest ever video installation, symphonic in scale, now comes to D.C. Titled Purple, it premiered in 2017 and its subject is climate change and the consequent disappearance of landscapes. Purple is the color of mourning in Ghana, and the gallery will be clothed in the color. —Elena Clavarino
