“For the last 60 years, it’s been hard to see Joan Baez as anything other than a saintly figure,” writes the music critic Chris Willman in Variety, “or, certainly, at the least, a beatifically placid one.” Willman was reviewing a new documentary on Baez, which he believes effectively captures the singer’s enigmatic persona and tumultuous personal history. The film, Joan Baez I Am A Noise, premiered at the Berlin Film Festival in February and arrives at the Film Forum this October. Over the course of its 115 minutes, home movies, archival footage, excerpts from diaries, and audio records are interlaced with commentary from Baez. She provides color to the well-known aspects of her half-century in the limelight, and also reveals the lesser-known, often disheartening secrets she’s kept from the public. The documentary’s “chief sin,” Willman concludes, “may just be that it doesn’t run about a half-hour longer.” —Jack Sullivan
