Chicago fields a dream cast for Janáček’s nightmarish, ultimately uplifting drama of infanticide in old Moravia. The resplendent Lise Davidsen stars as the eponymous villager, who is pregnant by a drunken ne’er-do-well. Nina Stemme is the battleax stepmother who postpones the youngsters’ wedding, little knowing that Jenůfa is already expecting. Things get a lot worse before they get better. Jakub Hrůša, a fast-rising talent from the Czech Republic, conducts the riveting score. —Matthew Gurewitsch
