The Greek artist Jannis Kounellis was only just finding himself in 1960. Not yet 30, he began copying advertisements and signs he saw on the street, and stenciled numbers, words, and letters onto his canvases. One thing led to another and that year Kounellis ended up wearing a canvas as a garment. The mid-60s saw a shift in his work: found objects, live animals, fire, earth, and gold became mainstays in his art. By the 1980s, Kounellis was traveling around Europe, exhibiting and performing in London, Eindhoven, and at Turin’s Castello di Rivoli. Kounellis died five years ago, at age 80. This major show on the artist is organized in collaboration with the Walker Art Center. —Elena Clavarino
