Calling all fans of Lady Bird, The Florida Project, and anything mother-daughter. This one’s for you! Set in rural Massachusetts in the summer of 1991, Janet Planet tells the story of an 11-year-old named Lacy (Zoe Ziegler) and her mother, Janet (Julianne Nicholson). More specifically, it tells the story of an 11-year-old trying to hold onto her childhood perception of her mother. Intelligent and imaginative, Lacy is one of those kids who is born an adult. She’s ready to spend a summer vacation with her mom, ideally staying in their cabin, hidden away from the rest of the world. But Janet has a different idea. She welcomes three visitors who mark the movie’s three chapters: Wayne, a boyfriend; Regina, an old friend; and Avi, a fling. Lacy is jealous of the guests and, for the first time, unable to ignore who Janet is as a woman. Written and directed by Annie Baker, who won the Pulitzer Prize in 2014 for her play The Flick, Janet Planet marks her film debut. Subtle and touching, the movie portrays the uncontrollable nature of outgrowing childhood. —Jeanne Malle
