Jacques Lewis

Installation view of “Jacques Lewis” at Vito Schnabel Gallery.

May 20 – July 9, 2022
43 Clarkson Street, New York, NY 10014, United States

Spencer Lewis nods to Willem de Kooning in the energy of his brushstrokes and to Hans Hoffman in his explosive color. The Los Angeles-based artist slowly builds up each work, layering smears atop lines atop slashes. His latest exhibition features 12 new paintings on massive canvases, some made of different canvases stitched together. The show is named after, and dedicated to, his father, Jacques. —Jensen Davis
