Izumi Kato’s finger-painted figurines and humanoids are enigmatic and sometimes disturbing. From afar they resemble tribal totems. Up close, the large luminous eyes and unformed features suggest embryos on the verge of transformation, or aliens. This exhibition features new paintings and sculptures, while a simultaneous exhibition at the Hara Museum ARC, in Gunma, is a retrospective that includes pieces from Kato’s own collection. —E.C.
