Isaac Julien, Lina Bo Bardi: A Marvelous Tangle

Sept 23, 2020 – Jan 17, 2021
Via Guido Reni, 4A, 00196 Roma RM, Italy

“Time is not linear,” said the Italian-born Brazilian architect, Lina Bo Bardi (1914–1992), “it is a marvelous tangle in which, at any moment, ends can be chosen and solutions invented, without beginning or end.” It was these words that inspired Isaac Julien, the English artist and filmmaker, to create a nine-channel video installation and a photographic series on Bo Bardi, documenting her electrifying life and talent. Julien flew to Brazil and filmed in the buildings she constructed: the Sao Paulo Museum of Art, the Bahia Museum of Modern Art, and the Teatro Gregario de Matos in Bahia. The result is an oeuvre that feels tangled yet spirited, just like Bo Bardi. —E.C.
